Often this damage is a result of decay, but crowns can also be used on a cracked or broken tooth, restoring the tooth in question to full function and repairing the smile so it looks as good as new again.
A crown acts as a kind of ‘cap’ for the tooth, sitting on top of the natural tooth and restoring structure and appearance so that you can safely eat and chew again, as well as bringing back a happy smile. They are custom-made and designed to fit in seamlessly with the rest of your smile, matching the shade and shape of your natural teeth.
Historically, crowns have often been made of precious metals such as gold. Advances in dental materials and techniques mean we’re now able to use materials that fit in much more naturally with the rest of the mouth and are usually now made from a blend of metal, porcelain and ceramics.
We use crowns to repair teeth that have become damaged, decayed, or diminished in some way as well as to support the placement of dental bridges, and as the final stage in some root canal treatments.
Crowns are usually placed over two appointments. We’ll first prepare the tooth, removing any damaged or decayed parts and then carefully shaping it so that it can receive the crown successfully. We’ll then take digital scans and images which will be used to craft your bespoke crown at a dental laboratory. We’ll fit you for a temporary crown while we wait for your crown to be made, and once it’s ready you’ll come back into the clinic to have it fitted and cemented into place.
We’ll always first apply a local anaesthetic, so you’re comfortable and pain-free throughout the treatment.
