Starting early is key when it comes to looking after children’s teeth and overall oral care. With good preventive care in these early stages, we can help prevent the need for intervention treatments in the future and set your children up for a lifetime of strong, healthy teeth and great oral health.
Children should first see the dentist when their milk teeth start appearing, or by the time they turn one. It’s important to bring them in at this stage, as we can not only keep an eye on their oral health but help get them used to visiting the dentist. This should help prevent any dental phobias or anxieties from occurring.
We normally recommend yearly or twice-yearly visits to the dentist for our youngest patients.
We will perform a full oral examination during every consultation to make sure the teeth are developing as they should, and that everything is in good health. We may recommend treatments such as fissure sealants, fillings, and fluoride treatments as necessary as well. Frequent consultations also mean that we’ll be able to keep an eye on whether orthodontic treatment may be necessary once all their adult teeth have come through.
Good home care is important at every age. You should be brushing your children’s teeth from the time when their first milk teeth erupt – this will need to be done by you, at first, but as they get older they’ll be able to take over the responsibility themselves under your supervision. Toothbrushing should be done with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes twice a day.
Being afraid of the dentist is unfortunately fairly common, especially among children. The most helpful thing you can do as a parent or guardian is to normalise taking care of their oral health and visiting the dentist and help present it in a positive light. We understand that some parents themselves may feel anxious or scared of the dentist. It’s important to not let your children see this as these feelings could transfer to them, and we want to help them feel as comfortable and confident as possible. Getting into a regular routine at home will certainly help with this, as well as bringing them with you to your own appointments, so they can see there’s nothing to be frightened about.
As a family-run, family-friendly clinic, our team at Bullsmoor will always do everything we can to help make our younger patients feel safe, comfortable, and even enthusiastic about their visits here! With a wealth of experience and a comfortable, welcoming clinic, we’re sure to be able to help them feel right at home.
