How will I know if I need a root canal treatment?

What happens during the treatment?

We’ll first examine the tooth before removing the infection and any decayed parts of the tooth and then thoroughly clean out the root canals. We’ll then use a sealant on the tooth to help prevent re-infection, leaving the tooth restored and protected from future infection.

How long does the treatment take?

Most root canal treatments are completed over two visits to the clinic approximately 2-3 weeks apart to ensure optimal results.

Will the treatment be painful?

We’ll always apply anaesthetic when carrying out this treatment, so you can be sure you’ll be comfortable and pain-free throughout.

Will I need to have a crown placed afterwards?

In many cases, we may need to place a crown to make sure the tooth is fully restored and that you have full function of your mouth. This is determined on a patient-by-patient basis, and depends on the extent of infection present in the tooth, and how much damage has occurred.

What is the alternative to a root canal treatment?

The only alternative to this treatment is extraction. If left untreated, infection of the dental pulp can lead to painful abscesses as well as the loss of the tooth, so it’s very important to have it treated as soon as possible.
