(This message was added in version 6.7.0.) in /home/bullsmoordentalc/public_html/bullsmoorclinic.co.uk/wp-includes/functions.php on line 6114Fillings are one of the most commonly-used methods of restoring teeth that have become damaged as a result of decay, which has then led to a cavity. They can also be used on teeth with wear and tear or a tooth that has damage as a result of trauma or injury.
As the name suggests, fillings quite literally ‘fill in’ a hole or cavity in a tooth. This restores the tooth to full function, leaving it repaired and better protected from further decay or damage.
Fillings are most often made from either a metal amalgam material or a composite material of resin and glass. Amalgam fillings are very hard-wearing and durable, but leave a dark silvery finish in the mouth, making them fairly noticeable. Composite fillings are designed to fit in with the rest of the mouth and can be shade-matched to the surrounding teeth.
The most common reason for needing a filling is a cavity. Cavities are caused when plaque-biofilm bacteria build up in the mouth leading to decay which then forms a hole in the tooth or teeth. Some patients may also need a filling due to abrasion/general wear and tear, or acid erosion caused by certain food and drinks.
Preventing cavities is fairly simple and is all down to good dental hygiene and preventive oral care. At home, you can help reduce your risk of cavities by brushing your teeth twice a day with an electric toothbrush, daily interdental cleaning, and occasionally using an antibacterial mouthwash (if recommended by your dentist/hygienist). Visiting the dentist for regular consultations and frequent hygiene/Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) appointments are also paramount in preventing the need for filling treatments.
We’ll first numb the area being treated with local anaesthetic, so you won’t feel a thing while being treated.
Most filling treatments can be achieved in 1-2 appointments.
