(This message was added in version 6.7.0.) in /home/bullsmoordentalc/public_html/bullsmoorclinic.co.uk/wp-includes/functions.php on line 6114Inlays and onlays are a type of dental restoration, designed to repair teeth that have become damaged either through decay, injury, or simple wear and tear (abrasion). In some cases, we may recommend an onlay instead of a crown, or an inlay in cases where a simple filling would not be able to fully restore the tooth in question.
Inlays fulfil a similar function to a filling, filling in a hole in a tooth – usually caused by a cavity – that a filling alone wouldn’t be able to fix or restore. You will be measured your inlay here at the clinic, and it will be custom-made in a laboratory for you before being applied by our team here.
An onlay is used to repair damage to the cusp of the tooth. Designed to sit over the top of the tooth, onlays can be used in a similar way to a crown, but require less of the natural tooth to be removed for application, making them a less invasive option. We may present onlays as an alternative to a crown, or in situations where the damage present doesn’t warrant the use of a crown.
Inlays and onlays are applied over two appointments. At the first appointment, we’ll take 3D scans and images of the tooth after first removing the decay. These images will then be sent off to a dental laboratory and will be used to create your personal inlay or onlay. This usually takes up to two weeks, but we’ll be able to provide you with a temporary filling in the interim. Once ready, you’ll come back into the clinic to have your inlay or onlay fitted and placed.
Like all our restorative treatments, we’ll always apply anaesthetic when necessary, and make sure you’re comfortable and pain-free throughout.
