Infection at the root of the tooth can cause severe pain in the patient, as well as swelling or inflamed gums, and can ultimately lead to a loose tooth as well as an abscess.
This endodontic treatment removes decay and infection from the interior of the tooth, restoring the tooth to full health and function and preventing the need for extraction.
Many patients will experience symptoms such as pain, sensitivity, inflammation, difficulty chewing, or a loose tooth. Not all patients who need a root canal treatment experience such symptoms, however, which is why it’s so important to visit us here regularly for frequent dental consultations.
We’ll first examine the tooth before removing the infection and any decayed parts of the tooth and then thoroughly clean out the root canals. We’ll then use a sealant on the tooth to help prevent re-infection, leaving the tooth restored and protected from future infection.
Most root canal treatments are completed over two visits to the clinic approximately 2-3 weeks apart to ensure optimal results.
We’ll always apply anaesthetic when carrying out this treatment, so you can be sure you’ll be comfortable and pain-free throughout.
In many cases, we may need to place a crown to make sure the tooth is fully restored and that you have full function of your mouth. This is determined on a patient-by-patient basis, and depends on the extent of infection present in the tooth, and how much damage has occurred.
The only alternative to this treatment is extraction. If left untreated, infection of the dental pulp can lead to painful abscesses as well as the loss of the tooth, so it’s very important to have it treated as soon as possible.
